I am Susann Allgaier, a visual artist living in Florence, Italy.

I create paintings, drawings and sculptures using traditional techniques.

A series of 40 portrait drawings in the makings of people currently in quarantine during this pandemic crisis. The project was conceived as a way of staying connected while stuck alone or with their families in different places, apart and yet strangely together. All subjects come from myriad walks of life and are in different ways affected by the isolation that the virus has imposed upon them.

The sitters model over Zoom where I include their heads and torso together with their hands. They might be reading a book, listening to music, talking, or writing. It is important to me that my models feel comfortable. In exchange for their work, I mail them each two masks, handsewn with colorful fabrics, created by me especially for this project.

The masks are multi-use face masks made out of cotton, flannel and silk including a filter pocket. They are environment-friendly and washable and can be ironed for sterilization purposes. The masks do not serve for self-protection, they are meant for the protection of others, thus allowing all of us to stay safe together at a distance.

At the end of this project, there will be an exhibition and on-line auction where the drawings can be acquired through donations.

Drawing materials: pencil on colored paper, the paper is hand colored with gouache.

Sewing materials: cotton, flannel, silk, thread, elastic.
